Ella Grace Davison - Artist Profile

Ella Davison (b. 2003)

Ella Davison, is a Sydney-based artist whose practice explores the intimate, physical, and psychological relationship between the human body and the rock face. Rooted in her experience as a climber, her work engages with climbing as more than a sport, processing it instead as a layered act of discovery, presence, and dialogue with the surrounding environment.

“For me climbing is a process of observing, responding and adapting. The rock resists and invites, shaping movement and demanding presence. This interaction between climber and landscape extends beyond the physical, it becomes a psychological and emotional exchange, a choreography between self and surface. My work seeks to translate this experience into a painterly language of mapping with mark-making, colour, and materiality. In doing so, I attempt to embody the invisible dimensions of climbing; tension, hesitation, trust, failure and flow.”

Through painting, Davison investigates the ways the body and environment negotiate each other, where every movement leaves a trace of lived experience. Her graphic mark-making draws on a digital aesthetic, situating her practice within a contemporary dialogue on embodiment, environment, and gesture.

Born in London (b.2003), Davison began her formal studies at the City & Guilds of London Art School before relocating to Sydney, where she is continuing her artistic development at the National Art School. Alongside her studio practice she is also active in curatorial projects, most recently curating ‘Ab(sense)’ at Central Space, Sydney. Her work is held in private collections in both Australia and the United Kingdom.
